What Do They Eat?

What Do They Eat?

By: Rebekah Cline

A Web Quest About What Animals and Plants Need to Survive

Subject Matter:      Life Science
Grade Level:          2nd Grade
Lesson Objective:  Learners will demonstrate the ability to identify what different living things need in order                                to survive.
Content Standard:  2-LS4-1. Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in                                    different habitats. www.cde.ca.gov/pd/ca/sc/ngssstandards.asp
Tech Standard:      ISTE Standard 3. Research and information fluency.
                             www.iste.org/docs/pdfs/20-14_ISTE_Standards-S_PDF.pdf

Websites:              www.google.com
                             www.wikipedia.org
                             www.about.com

Lesson Plan:          Using the above research websites, students will engage in an interactive scavenger hunt through the Internet. Students will actively engage in finding the answers to the questions below.  This web quest would tie into an overall lesson plan about biomes and what plants and animals need in order to survive.  The utilization of the web quest makes the students active learners in gathering the information versus just having it handed to them in a lecture or textbook reading. In this way, the information will have a greater lasting hold.

Essential Question: Plants, insects, and animals all eat a variety of food, but they all drink the same thing.                                    Why do you suppose that is?

Web Quest:
1: What do plants need to grow?
                         2: What is photosynthesis?
3: What do penguins eat and drink?
4: What do sheep eat and drink?
5: What do anteaters eat and drink?
6: What do humans eat and drink?
7: What is the difference between herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores?
8: What do caterpillars eat and drink?
                         9: What is metamorphosis?

Assessment:      By having the students search for the answers to these questions, they become a more active part of the learning process.  They are more likely to retain the information because they sought it out versus if it was just lectured and handed to them.  I would assess their learning by looking at the answers to their webquest and also by having them write a two paragraph paper about what they learned including their thoughts on the essential question.
